When a company only seems to hire younger people

It has been said that looks can be deceiving. This statement is certainly true as looks can indeed be deceiving. However, simply because they can does not mean that they are in every situation. For example, if you decide to apply at a company and it looks like nearly every employee was born after the 1970s, a number of things could be going on.

First, the company could be a relatively new enterprise and all the company’s first hires happened to be younger workers willing to invest their time for less income and fewer benefits than more experienced workers were. Second, the company has unintentionally only hired young workers but it would gladly welcome more experienced employees. Third, there is a cultural undertone within the company that leads its management to either intentionally or subconsciously discriminate against older workers.

There are certainly other possible scenarios at play in the example described above. However, the point that this example illustrates is that sometimes a hiring pattern can look like discrimination; sometimes this pattern can be deceiving and no discrimination is occurring and sometimes discrimination certainly might be part of this company’s hiring equation.

If you are concerned that you may have been turned down for a job you are qualified for due to age discrimination, or any other discrimination-related pattern, do not hesitate to speak with an attorney about your situation. Speaking with an attorney does not obligate you to take any particular course of action. However, this kind of consultation will hopefully make your decision making that much more informed.
